Information: BA(Hons) Archaeology, London Institute of Archaeology Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries Julian Munby is the head of the Heritage Buildings department and provides expert advice and assessment of historic buildings and areas. He has specialised in the archaeology of buildings from the medieval period to the 20th century, ranging from royal palaces to railway stations, and with a particular interest in timber construction. He has also worked extensively on urban and rural landscapes.

He has been involved in heritage assessment for many environmental impact studies using an integrated approach to buried and standing heritage, and has contributed to writing the revised guidance on heritage in EIAs for the Highways Agency. Julian has provided advice to the EU on EIA standards for heritage (Carrickmines, Ireland). He has worked on the buildings and landscapes of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in Kent and London, and is currently engaged on similar work for BAA at Stansted Airport.

Julian has been involved in a series of Conservation Plans for major monuments, including Audley End, Framlingham and Orford Castles for English Heritage, Tyntesfield, Tattershall Castle, and Knole for the National Trust, and the Tower of London World Heritage Site for Historic Royal Palaces. A series of Conservation Plans have also been undertaken for the Heritage Council of Ireland, on Kilkenny Town Walls, Newtown Jerpoint, and the defences of Athlone and Carlingford.

Work overseas has included an assessment of monuments of the sugar industry in Montserrat, and contributions to the Pamukkale World Heritage Site Management Plan which involved providing advice during a series of meetings in Turkey and contribution to the final report. Julian was part of the OA team carrying out a major archaeological study of the Ch�teau de Mayenne in France, and he has also carried out fieldwork at Amber (Jaipur) in India for the Amber Trust in a pilot scheme for heritage awareness and tourism.

With numerous publications and experience of public speaking, JM has appeared as an expert witness at public inquiries and legal hearings, and has also appeared in the Time Team Big Royal Dig at Windsor Castle.
