The packages below are all ones we either use or just admire. Software we have made contributions to or make extensive use of have their own page; others just link to their own site. This page will be split into application areas soon as the list grows ever larger! Other interesting stuff can be found over on the Open Archaeology Launchpad site . Joomla - powers this website. Mapbender from CCGIS, a WebGIS client suite - an archaeology specific implementation can be found in the gallery. PaKnPost allows large files to be not sent by email, quickly and securely. Alfresco, a rather neat enterprise content management system (aka document or file management system). Asterisk, an open source telephony exchange with full-featured VOIP support. OpenOffice - a highly capable suite of office productivity tools, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database functionality. Default file format is compliant with ISO 26300 but it can also deal with legacy formats such as those created in Microsoft Office. VLMA - Virtual Lightbox for Museums and Archives (and archaeologists!). This allows the creation of collections of items from many sources to be displayed in one virtual place. GRASS - along with the various integrated packages, GRASS looks set to be the most powerful GIS system available. Archaeology tweaked package anyone? QGIS - provides a desktop package which makes an excellent free viewer, and has potential to become an excellent front end for GRASS. gvSIG - a Spanish project sponsored by the Valencian state goverment, which is both a highly capable desktop GIS system, with great SDI integration possibilities, and an outstanding example of what local government can acheive with software projects. Zimbra - the product to upgrade Microsoft Exchange to. Particularly powerful for more distributed organisations as it is web focussed rather than Outlook focussed. TimeSheets - we wrote this. It is of course really cool. Anyone with a complex multi-person, multi-project time recording need will probably find it worthwhile. A demo server is available. HelpMeICT - we helped with this. It is equally cool. If you need something easy to use and end user facing to manage issues, whether IT, buildings, logistics or for customer support, this is probably what you were looking for. A demo server of the latest version will be available shortly. |
