Bonn SquareOxford City Council propose to refurbish Bonn Square, Oxford, and construct new surface finishes, landscaping, lighting, street furniture and plant new trees. Our archaeological work on the site has so far comprised the recording of memorial stones, headstones and ledger stones, which will be reburied within the site, and the collection and reburial of disarticulated charnel bones. These bones had been previously disturbed by 19th-century burials and groundworks on the site. Several 19th-century brick lined shaft graves have also been identified and recorded. The majority of the burials within the site will not be affected by the construction work, although any individuals revealed at the western and eastern edges of the site will be excavated and reburied elsewhere on the site. The stone foundations of the 18th century church of St Peter le Bailey have been revealed in the southern part of the site, and a brick vault has been discovered within the western part of that church. The work is scheduled to continue for a further two or three weeks.

The 11th-century church of St Peter le Bailey was situated within the southern part of the development, and an associated graveyard would have lain to the north. By 1578 the church is depicted with a nave with a central tower, and northern and southern aisles. The church collapsed in 1726 and a new church was constructed on the site in 1728. The new church was demolished in the early 1870s to allow for road widening and the site remained a disused graveyard into the 20th century when it was acquired by Oxford City Council.
